Voice Of The Tigers Mr. Ernie Harwell Diagnosed With Cancer

By Jack Rosenberg/In Play! Magazine

The Detroit Free Press has reported that the voice of the Tigers for many decades, Mr. Ernie Harwell has a tumor in his bile duct, an incurable malady.

Mr. Harwell has reportedly declined surgery at the age of 91.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and talking to Mr. Harwell in the Tigers media booth aptly named the "Ernie Harwell Media Center".

In what began as an interview quickly turned into me just sitting there and listening, on edge, to some great old time baseball stories! The pen never hit the paper and only a small fraction of what we talked about made it to print.

But I have the memory of talking to one of the greatest men in baseball. Take care of yourself Mr. Harwell...

For Tiger fans who would like to send along their best wishes. Per Mr. Harwell's request, please send your cards or letters to his close friend and advisor: S. Gary Spicer 16845 Kercheval Suite 5 Grosse Pointe, MI 48230 Cards and letters received will be hand delivered to Mr. Harwell.

  2. That is unfortunate. Mr. Harwell is one of the greatest people ever to grace the airwaves with his voice and we were lucky to have him all these years. He is a very active and healthy man, despite his age, and hopefully will be able to handle this well. My hopes and prayers are with him.
